Deciphering speech in the presence of background noise is unfortunately
a common problem. Recent advancements in hearing aid technology overcome
this common complaint with the use of:
> Directional Microphones, which make it easier to focus on one person or thing (e.g. television) in situations of background noise. The microphone emphasises sound coming from one direction, usually the front, while suppressing noise coming from other directions.
For example, when in a restaurant, the voice of the person sitting opposite you is amplified while the saucy conversation from the table behind is reduced (not, however, ideal for surreptitious eavesdropping).
